League Guide for Managers

Complete guide to creating, managing, and running successful leagues on NextOnCourt.

Keys to League Success

Clear Rules Upfront

Publish comprehensive rules before registration. Cover scoring, forfeits, rescheduling, and conduct. This prevents disputes later.

Consistent Communication

Send weekly updates on standings and reminders. Respond promptly to questions. Over-communicate rather than under-communicate.

Enforce Deadlines

Set clear deadlines and stick to them. This keeps the season on track and is fair to players who meet their obligations.

Be Fair & Consistent

Apply rules the same way for everyone. Document decisions for reference. Consistency builds trust in your league.

Step 1

Creating Your League

Starting a New League

  1. 1Log into your NextOnCourt account with organizer privileges
  2. 2Navigate to your Dashboard and click 'Create League'
  3. 3Choose your sport: Tennis, Pickleball, or Padel
  4. 4Select the league format that best fits your goals

League Format Options

Team League:Teams compete against other teams. Best for clubs or established groups.
Individual League:Players register solo, paired by organizer or self-select partners.
Flex Schedule:Players self-schedule matches within time windows. Maximum flexibility.
Fixed Schedule:Organizer sets all match times. More structure, less coordination needed.

Basic League Information

  1. 1Enter a clear league name (e.g., 'Spring 2024 Doubles League')
  2. 2Set season start and end dates
  3. 3Define match frequency (weekly, bi-weekly, monthly)
  4. 4Specify venue(s) where matches will be played
  5. 5Upload league logo or banner (optional)
  6. 6Write a comprehensive league description

Match Format Configuration

  1. 1Select match type: singles, doubles, or mixed doubles
  2. 2Set scoring format (best of 3 sets, pro-sets, 8-game pro-sets)

  4. 4Configure minimum and maximum players per division
  5. 5Specify if each division has separate scheduling

Rating Requirements

  1. 1Choose rating system: NTRP, UTR, DUPR, or self-rated
  2. 2Set minimum and/or maximum ratings for each division

  4. 4Plan for players without ratings (assessment matches, provisional placement)

Division Sizing

  1. 1Plan optimal division sizes (typically 6-10 teams/individuals)
  2. 2Smaller divisions = more matches per opponent
  3. 3Larger divisions = more variety in opponents
  4. 4Consider number of weeks in season vs. matches needed

Multi-Division Considerations

problem solving

Troubleshooting Common Issues

Solutions to challenges league managers frequently encounter.

A team captain isn't adding their players

Send reminder to captain with deadline. If unresponsive, contact players directly and offer to add them manually. Set clear roster deadlines in league rules.

Two teams/players can't find a mutual time

Mediate by proposing specific times. Consider allowing matches at multiple venues. Set a final deadline and default if not resolved. Document your attempts to help.

A player disputes their division placement

Review their rating and recent results. Consider playing assessment matches. Early in season, adjustments are easier. Be consistent in applying your criteria.

Payment was received but registration incomplete

Verify payment in dashboard. If confirmed, manually complete registration. If payment missing but player claims they paid, ask for confirmation and contact [email protected].

A team wants to withdraw mid-season

Process refund per your policy. Remove remaining matches or convert to forfeits. Consider finding replacement team. Update standings accordingly.

Players are chronically late reporting scores

Send automated reminders. Implement penalties for late reporting. Consider defaulting matches not reported by deadline. Communicate consequences clearly.

Standings are calculating incorrectly

Verify all match results are entered correctly. Check tiebreaker settings. Manually correct any data errors. For system calculation issues, contact [email protected].

League Manager FAQs

How do I handle an odd number of teams/players?

Use byes in the schedule. Each team/player gets a bye week where they don't play. Rotate byes so they're distributed fairly. Consider adding a late registrant if one is available.

Can players be on multiple teams in the same league?

This depends on your rules. Some leagues allow it (different divisions); others prohibit it. Set clear rules before registration and enforce consistently.

What's the best way to handle forfeits?

Decide upfront: does the opponent get a win? What's the score recorded? Are there penalties for forfeiting team? Consistent policy prevents disputes. Consider 2-match limit before removal.

How do I ensure competitive balance across divisions?

Require rating verification where possible. Monitor early results for mismatches. Be willing to move players between divisions early in season if placement was wrong. Gather feedback on matchup quality.

Should I use flex or fixed scheduling?

Flex is better for busy adults who need flexibility. Fixed is better for ensuring matches happen and reducing coordination burden. Consider your audience and available court time.

How do I clone a league for next season?

Go to your completed league, click 'Duplicate League', and update dates. All settings, divisions, and configurations copy over. You can then modify as needed.
